Network Security Advisory
A monitored firewall is the most important single upgrade that you can make to your office or home network. Our customers told us something that surprised us. Many of their networks do not have a firewall, or they have a firewall that is not updated and is not monitored. It is generally accepted that a system or network connected to the Internet without having a firewall - will be compromised (hacked) in about 20 minutes. The best prevention is a firewall that is configured, updated and monitored. What do hackers want? Hackers want usernames and passwords to any systems or websites that you use. They will use this information to steal your identity, or even worse, to hack the other systems and try to get access to information on other people.
Hackers want control of your system so that they can use your computer to illegally distribute software, movies, music and other materials illegally. They can also control your system and use it as a "relay" so that the hackers computer is not easily traceable. There are many other uses that hackers have for your computer – your network – and the computers of the companies you access over the internet. How will you know you've been hacked? Most likely you won't – until it is too late for you or for the other systems that you accidentally gave others access to – or until you receive notice that you have been distributing materials illegally. Once you have been hacked, the cleanup can be expensive in time, money and business and data lost. What can you do? The best thing is to get a firewall, install it, and link it to a service that is updating the firewall and constantly logging, analyzing and reacting to alarms from the data. Call Voicenet. We can help you get a firewall that will work for your needs. We can configure it and manage it for you. We will react to ant alerts. Call 800-835-5710. And watch for the next Voicenet Connections newsletter. We will be discussing firewalls in more detail. |
